John Smith (Vermont)

John Smith, was a Representative from Vermont. He was born in Barre, Massachusetts on August 12, 1789 and died in St. Albans, Vermont, on November 26, 1858.

He attended the common schools, moved to St. Albans and studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1810 and commenced practice in St. Albans.

He was State's Attorney for Franklin County from 1826 to 1832, member of the State house of representatives from 1827 to 1837, and served as speaker from 1831 to 1833.

Later on he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1839-March 3, 1841) but was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1840 to the Twenty-seventh Congress.

John Smith was the father of Vermont Governor J. Gregory Smith and Congressman Worthington Curtis Smith, and the grandfather of Governor Edward Curtis Smith.
